Business Lunches, Coffee Breaks, and Happy Hours: PredictHQ Survey Shows U.S. Workers Plan to Return to Pre-Pandemic Habits

“Return to Office Restaurant Report” shows local businesses surrounding downtown hubs can expect a significant positive impact as office workers return

SAN FRANCISCO  –  June 29, 2021 – PredictHQ, the demand intelligence company, today announced findings from its “Return to Office Restaurant Report.” The survey of U.S. workers finds that as employees return to offices either part-time or full time, many are planning to resume previous eating and drinking habits, including getting lunch or happy hour at their favorite watering holes and other old haunts.

“Much has been said about U.S. workers returning to offices, but less has been made clear about the expected impact to the local businesses that surround office hubs -- which suffered greatly amid the pandemic -- about what they can expect as office workers come back,” said Campbell Brown, CEO at PredictHQ. “This survey shows that restaurants, bars and rideshare services should expect many of their regulars to return to their normal habits, as well as be ready for pent up demand. With already fragile supply chains, worker staffing issues, and all the other many challenges already facing local businesses, companies need to plan now for how they’re going to handle a potential influx of clientele.”

The survey measured the responses of 1,600 workers from across the U.S.

As companies continue to measure the impact of COVID-19 and what their “new normal” will be, they also need to anticipate the impact of the return of events in order to efficiently plan for the demand. Organizations across the globe continue to recover at different rates, further complicating their ability to have a cohesive and scalable view of demand. Through this recent survey, PredictHQ has concluded that events are returning and restaurants, parking providers and venues need to be ready.

In addition to the survey report, PredictHQ, through its proprietary data, outlines the following number of events returning to the top five major US cities in the next 30 days:

  • San Francisco has more than 220 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

  • Los Angeles has more than 390 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

  • New York has more than 270 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

  • Chicago has more than 460 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

  • San Diego has more than 200 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

  • Houston has more than 250 impactful events such as concerts, sports and performing arts events this month.

The PredictHQ demand intelligence API helps customers plan appropriately for changes in demand for their products and services. Popular with data scientists and data engineers from a wide spectrum of industries working to understand demand anomalies, this impact knowledge lets companies proactively discover outside influences that will have an impact. Users are able to access relevant event notifications without integrating code or investing in development time. Customers include Uber, Domino’s, Accenture, First Data and leading accommodation, aviation, transportation, finance and retail companies.

Key takeaways from the report include:

How often workers plan to work from their offices:

  • 43% say every day

  • 23% say 2-3 days per week

  • 16% say weekly or monthly

  • 6% say full remote

  • 12% say they have no Concrete Plans

A return to old habits:

  • More “Let’s do lunch”: Nearly ⅓ of respondents (31%) expect to go out for lunch more often than before the pandemic, while 40% of workers expect to go out for lunch about the same amount as before.

  • Bringing Back the Bar Flies: Bars and restaurants can expect to retain their pre-pandemic happy hour regulars, with 79% of people who went out "every day" after work before the pandemic expecting to continue.

  • Uber and Lyft bounce back: 27% of workers say they plan to use rideshare services more often than before the pandemic, and 51% expect to return to their normal usage.

While surveys offer a "pulse check," the reality is that survey data actually doesn't predict what people are going to do in the future - and, as COVID taught us, neither does historical data. To predict demand in a dynamic world, businesses need Demand Impact Data: global, high quality, accurate, timely, and enriched with all the other factors that impact demand.
